Hive highlights blog ft. Owl in the moss

Introducing Hive Highlights, the weekly blog on Bee Festive's website that celebrates local brands and fosters a hive community.

This week, we shine the spotlight on a friend of mine, Jess from Owl in the Moss. We are lucky to share the journey of motherhood, each raising a pigeon pair. Jess and I are on a fun golfing adventure together, teeing off and embracing the challenges of the course. But it's not all about birdies and bogeys! We've discovered that the golf course is also the perfect breeding ground for brainstorming incredible business ideas. With each swing and putt, our minds light up with inspiration, fuelled by the joy and camaraderie we share. Join us on this exciting journey as we tee up new possibilities and bring our entrepreneurial dreams to life, one stroke at a time.

Discover the inspiring stories and unique products that set them apart. We are delighted to stock the exquisite products of Owl in the Moss on Bee Festive, and the feedback from our customers has been nothing short of exceptional.Join us as we come together to create a buzzing hive of support and appreciation for our local businesses.

Hey there, Jess!

Tell me a bit about yourself:

My name is Jess, I’m a mum of two little kiddies and married to an incredible guy. I have always loved the outdoors and Africa definitely runs through my veins. As a family we spend as much time as possible in the bush, at the beach or doing something outdoors. I feel most at peace with a glass of wine in hand, watching a sunset in the bush surrounded by friends and family. I love being a solopreneur and am so excited about the future of Owl in the Moss.

What inspired you to create this brand?

I have always wanted to own my own business and love decor & design. I have a passion for wildlife and the natural world so to be able to combine this all is a dream come true.

Can you tell me about the products you offer and what sets them apart from similar products on the market?

We sell all things home, decor & lifestyle. All of our products are made in South Africa and one thing that really sets us apart is that all of our designs are originally hand-painted in watercolours by a local artist who captures the natural world through a slightly obscure lens. We print our designs on fabric and local teams make everything from napkins to picnic blankets and our lifestyle range offers travel mugs, cooler bags & a variety of other goodies.

What is the story behind the name of your brand?

Owl in the Moss is a Swedish term meaning “Something out of the ordinary” which is exactly what we pride ourselves on.

Are your products handmade or locally sourced?

Yes 100% of our products are locally made from the inception of the designs to the final products. We are passionate about job creation & showcasing the incredible talent this country has to offer.

What are your values as a brand and how do they reflect in your products?

We really love and appreciate the natural world and try to share the uniqueness and wonders of it all with our customers through items they can use in their homes everyday. We hope people will also learn to love nature and treat it with the respect and care it deserves.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as a local brand, and how did you overcome it?

I have found it very difficult at times to rely on local suppliers who have little time for small businesses. As we do everything locally it can be frustrating when you have no alternative. Also load shedding hasn’t been easy on anyone.

What are your future plans for the brand?

I would love to expand our offering and continue to develop new and exciting products. Perhaps open a retail space in Cape Town...

How can consumers best support your brand and the local community?

Our brand is primarily geared towards gifting and our products are ideal for men, women and families. So consumers who buy products from our online store are the best support out there!

Who is someone that inspires you?

David Attenborough has always been my absolute hero. I have loved him since I was a child. I have always admired his sense of adventure and absolute lifelong dedication to the natural world.

What do you love most about South Africa?

The incredible access we have to magnificent natural spaces. We have some of the worlds most beautiful beaches, mountains, rivers and of course the bush!

What is your favourite song?

Tough one as I love a very wide variety of music but at the moment I would say Masterpiece - The Reubens

Is there anything you could say to someone wanting to start their own business?

Go for it! It is not easy at times but 1000x worth it. More than ever South Africa needs small businesses to grow the economy and support our communities.

To end off, let's extend a heartfelt round of applause to Jess from Owl in the Moss. Her passion, creativity, and dedication have truly shone through, leaving a lasting impression on our Bee Festive community.
